The town is steeped in mythology, famously associated with the sea monster Scylla from Homer's Odyssey. Scilla is divided into two main areas: Chianalea, often called the "Venice of the South" for its narrow streets and houses directly on the water, and the more modern Marina Grande, with its sandy beaches and promenade. Overlooking the town is the Ruffo Castle, a historic fortress that adds to Scilla's timeless beauty.
